- Who are the Toastmasters?
Toastmasters is a non-profit educational organisation that operates clubs world wide for the purpose of helping members improve their communication, public speaking, and leadership skills. The organisation grew out of a single club that was established in 1924 in United States by a guy name Ralph C. Smedley that wanted to get better at public speaking when was in need of holding toasts at parties, as the name of the organisation :).Today there are over 300.000 members around the world that are organized in local clubs.
- What’s the main purpose of them?
The main purpose is to create new leaders, and that is accomplished by Toastmasters’ Education Program that prepares people in public speaking and leadership.
- How can one be a Toastmaster?
First you need to find a club around you, after that you need to go to an open doors meeting and ask someone from the club for instruction on how to become a member.
- You recently co-organized the NILS Bucharest Summer School about “Human Rights in International Commercial Relationships”. Did the Toastmaster training helped?
Even though I am a member at Toastmasters Idest in Bucharest for just one month I can say that it helped me get a lot more comfortable speaking to an audience, discover about my leadership skills and how to work on them and I started to improve my spontaneous speeches, so yes it really helped me.
- Would you recommend Toastmasters?
I would recommend Toastmasters for anyone because it is one of the best ways of getting along with speaking in front of an audience, it help you improve your leadership skills or discover if you did not know you had them. E.G: if you want to work in politics, as a lawyer or something that requires you to speak in front of an audience being part in Toastmasters is something that you must do.
- What do you say, when you want a mermaid to give you food?
I would ask her to give me something and if I need to I will say some fishy jokes ☺
- Can we get a little insight on you? (goals for now)
For the moment I just want to learn Romanian and international law, improve as many of my qualities as I can, meet as many people as I can and to have as much fun as possible during that process.
- What’s your plan for the future?
Someday I want to be a lawyer, which would be my main goal. Another domain that I would enjoy to work in would be Marketing& PR as a consultant for a big company or for politicians, but since in Romania the road for working in this domain is a bit foggy, for the moment I am focusing more on the lawyer part.
